Make your assessment practical

Bring an everyday example.

Turning to check traffic, sitting at a desk or lifting a household item can each place different demands on your back and neck. Tell us which task is difficult and how your symptoms change, so the assessment relates to the way you use your body.

Start with what matters to you.

Back or neck concerns can make work, sleep, driving or household tasks feel more difficult. At our Elizabeth Park clinic, we start by listening to what has changed and which activities you would like to manage more comfortably.

Tell us when your symptoms began, what seems to aggravate or ease them, and any other health concerns. Whether this is a new episode or a longer-standing problem, your priorities help shape the assessment.

What happens at an assessment?

Your physiotherapist will discuss your health history and assess relevant movements, strength and everyday tasks. Examination and treatment are explained so you can ask questions and give informed consent. Let us know if a movement is uncomfortable or you would prefer a different approach.

We discuss the findings in plain language, including whether another health professional’s assessment may be appropriate. You do not need to know the cause of your symptoms before contacting us.

Care built around your situation.

Depending on your assessment, care may include:

  • Advice about everyday movement, activity and managing demands.
  • Exercises selected for your current abilities and goals.
  • Hands-on treatment where appropriate and agreed with you.
  • Review of your response and adjustment of the plan.

We explain the options, expected benefits and risks before proceeding. The approach and number of appointments depend on your individual needs; you can discuss questions or concerns at any stage.

Preparing for your visit.

Wear comfortable clothing that allows the area to be assessed. Bring any relevant referral, existing imaging reports, medication list and details of previous treatment. It can help to think of two or three activities you would like to work towards.

Bring reports you already have; your physiotherapist can discuss whether any further medical assessment is needed. Please tell our team about communication, mobility or access needs when arranging your appointment.

Helpful questions.

Can I book without a referral?

You can generally book a private physiotherapy appointment directly. Referral or approval requirements can differ when a funding scheme is involved. Call our team if you need help choosing an appointment.

What if I also have a foot or walking concern?

Tell your physiotherapist during the assessment. If podiatry input may be useful, we can discuss it with you. You can also explore Keep Me Walking Podiatry through the link at the top of this page.

Can I discuss an ongoing back or neck problem?

Yes. You can book to discuss a new concern or an ongoing problem. Bring information about previous care, exercises and any existing reports so your physiotherapist can understand what has been tried and what you would like to work towards.
