Make your assessment practical

Think about your day.

Long periods at a screen, checking blind spots while driving or sleeping in one position can each affect neck symptoms. Note when symptoms start and what you were doing.

About neck pain

Neck pain is common and often settles over time, but it can be uncomfortable and limit everyday activities. It may follow a strain, a long day at a desk or a change in activity, or start without a clear reason.

Some headaches, often called cervicogenic headaches, are thought to relate to the neck. Headaches have many possible causes, so your physiotherapist will ask detailed questions and suggest a GP review where appropriate.

What happens at your appointment

We discuss your symptoms, health history and daily activities, then assess neck and upper-back movement, strength and other relevant areas. You will receive a plain-language explanation of the findings and the options available.

Care options we may discuss

  • Advice on activity, desk set-up and breaks.
  • Exercises for movement, strength and control.
  • Hands-on treatment where appropriate and agreed with you.
  • A review of your progress and adjustments to the plan.

Responses vary between people; your physiotherapist will explain expected benefits and risks before treatment.

When to seek medical help first

Seek urgent care for a sudden, severe headache, a headache with confusion, weakness, difficulty speaking or a stiff neck with fever, or neck pain after a significant fall or car accident.

Physiotherapy is not an emergency service. Call 000 or go to an emergency department for a serious injury, chest pain, sudden weakness or numbness, or if you feel very unwell. See your GP promptly if pain follows a fall or accident, keeps getting worse, wakes you every night, or comes with fever, unexplained weight loss or other new symptoms.

Your physiotherapy appointment.

See Jency Donda, physiotherapist, at our Elizabeth Park clinic – open Mondays 9:00am–5:00pm. No referral is needed for a private appointment. For a GP care plan, NDIS, DVA, Support at Home or WorkCover appointment, check the relevant referral and plan information and our fees and rebates page before booking.

Helpful questions.

Can a physio help with headaches?

Physiotherapy may be an option for some headaches that are related to the neck. Your physiotherapist will assess whether this is likely in your case and when a GP review is more appropriate.

I work at a computer all day. What should I bring?

A photo of your workstation can help, along with details of your hours and breaks.

Do I need a referral?

Not for a private appointment. Referral requirements apply if you use a GP care plan, DVA, NDIS or WorkCover.
